My Favorite Way to Prepare Tofu
I hate when people tell me they hate tofu because it has no flavor! Maybe I’ve just grown to love the taste of tofu, but there are ways to really make it taste good. It pretty much absorbs the flavor of whatever you cook it in. Did you know that a serving of tofu has only 5 grams of fat and 10 grams of protein? It is also a good source of vitamin K and calcium.
I’ve baked tofu before, but that can take a long time. I guess I just like fast results, especially when I’m starving!
I usually cook my tofu in a large pan on the stove with olive oil and soy sauce, a little pepper and it tastes really good. You can put it on top of a salad or eat it just as is with vegetables and rice, or even slather some bbq sauce on it and throw it in a taco!
You will need:
- 1 block of extra firm tofu
- 2 tbsp of soy sauce
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- pepper to taste
Instructions
- Drain and press tofu. I wrap the tofu in a paper towel and I usually press it for 10-15 minutes in between two plates with a heavy cookbook sitting on top.
- Heat olive oil and soy sauce in pan on the stove.
- Cut tofu into squares.
- Place tofu squares in pan and cook until browned on each side. I usually stir them up a little bit after 5 minutes to see how they’re coming along. Then I add some pepper. They brown up really nice and get a crispy outer edge, which I love!
There you have it. Perfectly cooked tofu in minutes. Last night I had some for dinner with wild rice and mixed vegetables. It was an easy, quick and healthy dinner.
You can thank me later!

I usually have it in salad, but also frequently straight out of the package

I am a big fan of freezing tofu (once its been thoroughly drained/pressed) and then thawing it out to cook. It gives it a nice chewy texture, perfect for BBQ tofu sandwiches.

I really like tofu- I shouldn’t have waited so long to try it! I haven’t had it in awhile- need to add it back into the rotation. This recipe sounds awesome!

I tried this recipe it was delicious, but didn’t make the nice squares because my tofu partially fell apart during the press. I did by the extra firm it was right out of the fridge and I followed your directions. I was hoping you might have an idea how this happened and how to avoid it in the future.

Did you press the liquid out of it? Sometimes a few pieces crumble on me but never the whole thing…strange.

I felt like perhaps the weight of the two plates and the book led to it falling apart. So yes I did do that part. Perhaps the two plates and not the book too?
Beth
I have made this twice… Its delicious and easy! Thanks:)
