Weekend in the Adirondacks – Part II – Food

Part 1 of my weekend can be found here!

Now, one of the best parts of staying at Garnet Hill was the FOOD! They are a B&B so the breakfast was included with our stay. It was delicious! The first morning we were there, we both had the egg and cheddar wrap, served with home fries and your choice of meat (I didn’t get any meat but Chris did). Unfortunately I was so excited about breakfast both days I didn’t take pictures of either of the meals. But trust me when I say it was GOOD!

The restaurant and pub were also open to the public, so you don’t have to be a guest to eat there.

Now, for dinner on Friday night Chris and I both got appetizers and we shared them. He went with the famous onion pie. I had read reviews online about this pie and we had to try it since it was supposed to be amazing.

The onion pie was served on a bed of greens, and it was literally onion pie with cheese. The crust was flaky and delicious, and the onions were sweet…cooked perfectly! This was the most interesting appetizer I’ve had in a while, and I loved it! Chris got it again for dinner on Saturday.

My appetizer was the chilled melon soup! It was refreshing, but nothing that amazing.

The menu for the pub had a lot of options, which I was surprised about! I had a hard time choosing what to get, but ultimately went with the Cajun shrimp. It was served with a red wine sauce and chopped tomatoes, which were tasty. The shrimp themselves were good, too. However, I would have liked a grain in this dish, like maybe rice, to give it a little more oomph.

Garnet Hill is also known for their baked goods–so of course we had to get dessert. I got peach pie a la mode–just what I was craving!

Again, the crust was perfectly flaky and delicious. There’s nothing better than home made pie, in my opinion!

The portions were normal sized, too, which was nice so we weren’t feeling overly stuffed by the end.

Saturday night after a morning of hiking and afternoon of relaxing, we got dinner in the pub again! This time I started with the sunrise salad, with goat cheese, roasted beets and sliced oranges.

I was your standard salad–lightly dressed and very good. The goat cheese was a plus!

For dinner I got the haddock sandwich–which sadly I was so excited about forgot to photograph. It was served with their home made potato chips…amazing! The sandwich was lightly breaded and not too greasy. I didn’t leave me feeling gross either. The sandwiches also came with pickles home made by the Adirondack Pickle Lady, which were also very good! They sell the pickles by the jar in their store, too.

Now, for dessert I was tempted to get pie again, but then I overheard the server telling another table they had home made carrot cake. How could I resist?

It was moist, delicious, and the frosting was so good, that I wished there were more on it! I give this carrot cake credit for getting me through my long run on Sunday…which I ran AFTER getting back home from mini vacation, at the hottest point in the afternoon.

Breakfast on Sunday was another good one. The options were eggs sandwiches or wraps cooked to order, and this time they had raspberry or chocolate chip pancakes. I went with the pancakes since I knew I’d be running later on that afternoon. I asked if they could combine both the berries and chocolate, they did! They were delicious, and served with real maple syrup and home fries.

Obviously the desserts were my favorite aspect of the food here…but aren’t they always? I have a sweet tooth. If you’re looking for a great place to get away that’s not too far from Albany, I would definitely recommend Garnet Hill.
