Winter Hike: Cat and Thomas Mountain Preserve
If you are looking for a nice hike not too far from the Albany area, check out Cat and Thomas Mountains in Bolton Landing, near Lake George. It’s about an hour from Albany and the hike itself is pretty easy! The trail follows an old road for a while, and eventually re-routes into the woods for a little bit. It is a gentle incline. There wasn’t much snow on the ground, but the trail was covered in ice! Thank goodness for microspikes! We took the yellow trail to the summit of Cat Mountain first. The summit is expansive and has great views of Lake George! We ate a snack and…

Winter Hike to Rooster Comb Mountain
My first hike of 2016 is in the books. On Wednesday, Jordan and I drove up to Keene Valley to hike Rooster Comb, a small mountain right off of Route 73. We were unsure of the conditions up there, so we brought along microspikes and snowshoes just in case. There was snow on the ground, but the trail was hard packed, so microspikes worked just fine. The weather was perfect for hiking. Cold but not too cold and not much wind. The trail starts off pretty flat. It passes to the left of a pond, and then you see a bridge on the right. The trail to Rooster Comb continues…

Mount Adams Firetower
It had been over a month since I last went hiking (I KNOW!)-so last Sunday, Brendan, Jenna and I decided to check another Adirondack Fire Tower off the list. Mount Adams! The trail to Mount Adams starts at the same trailhead as Allen Mountain, one of the high peaks. I hiked Allen back in September of 2014 with Christine, and it was one of the most epic hikes I’ve done to date. Anyway, it was nice to be back in this part of the Adirondacks, because I really loved the first few miles of that hike. To get to Mount Adams, you hike the same trail to get there, but…

Solo Hike to Owls Head Mountain
Last weekend Jordan and I attended a wedding up in Lake Placid. Of course I had to stop and pull over on the side of the road to enjoy the views of my favorite peaks. Sometimes I just stare at them and think–wow, I can’t believe I’ve climbed most of those! They look so big, even from far away. On the way home I stopped at one of my favorite hikes, Owls Head, in Keene. I hiked it with my parents last summer and knew it was easy (it was a spur of the moment decision). I happened to have a pair of hiking boots in my car. Jordan and…

Hiking Gray Peak and Mount Skylight
Happy fall! I celebrated the first weekend of fall by hiking, of course! My friend Jenna and I drove up to the ADK Loj to hike Gray Peak and Mount Skylight. We got an early start because it is a long hike! We left the Exit 9 Park and Ride at 4:35AM and got to the Loj around 7, and were on the trail by 7:15. We were at Marcy Dam by 8:05AM. We got the the Phelps/Marcy and Avalanche Lake junction and went right to take the Avalanche Lake trail. At 8:40 we got to the junction for Lake Arnold and took a left. We were going to go…
