Hiking in New Mexico

Last month for Martin Luther King Day weekend, my friend Margaret and I took a trip to El Paso, Texas to visit our good friend Jenna. Jenna recent moved there so we decided it was time for a visit. One of the nights we were there we walked over the bridge to Juarez, Mexico, where we had drinks and some Mexican steak! It was mine and Margaret’s first time in Mexico which was exciting.

The next day we went for a hike in the Organ Mountains, part of the Desert Peaks National Monument, in New Mexico. It was beautiful! We started our hike at the Dripping Springs Visitor Center (it was closed due to the Government Shutdown) and hiked the Dripping Springs trail (~5 mi loop). It was such a beautiful day! It was great to escape the cold and snow for a few days! We had just missed the entire MLK weekend blizzard, too.

There were a lot of things to see on this trail, including great views of the Organ Mountains and some remains of old buildings. There’s something about the desert that I love. Maybe it’s the unique landscapes and plant life that are so much different from here in upstate New York.
