Hiking Treadway Mountain (Pharaoh Lake Wilderness) – 6.19.21

Treadway Mountain in the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness is a great day hike in the Ticonderoga area. Located right near the Putnam Pond Campground (note: there is a $6 fee for parking at the trailhead which is located inside the campground), Treadway is a great option for campers looking for a nice hike right from their campsite. Brendan and I decided on Treadway since it’s part of the ADK 29er Challenge and also serves as a good warm up hike for more challenging hikes we hope to do this season.

This sign is kind of misleading. It is 1.6 miles to the junction to the Treadway Trail, 3.8 to the summit of Treadway

The hike starts out meandering past some ponds and wetlands. The trail is pleasant, there weren’t too many rocks or root sections, just a nice walk in the woods.

At 1.6 miles there is a junction to the Treadway summit. We stopped here for a brief drink of water and snack. It was HOT! and the deer flies were BAD!

From there it is only 2.2 miles to the summit. The trail started climbing but never really got too steep.

Soon enough we came to a rocky clearing. Look for the cairns to follow the trail. There is a false summit with some nice views, but don’t stop there. The top of the mountain is “U” shaped. You will be able to see the True Summit from there.

the Rocky ledge is the true summit

After leaving the false summit, I saw a familiar face! We ran into Skyler who was staying that the Putnam Pond Campground. What a small world!

We said a brief hello and he headed down while we continued to the top. There are nice views of the Ponds and the open rock makes a nice place to have lunch.

Treadway was a great hike, I’d love to come back in the fall for some leaf peeping!
