Girlnetic Event Series Kickoff Review

Yesterday I had the opportunity to check out the Girlnetic Event Series Kickoff in downtown Albany! Tuesday I told you about the schedule of events, and finally the day was here!

The event was held up in Taste Penthouse, which was pretty awesome. Such nice views of Albany! Anyway, at 9:00AM we signed in and got the event schedule. My sister came with my as my guest, so I was glad to have someone there to talk to!

The goal of this kick off event was to help get people involved in fitness activities and to help women meet other women interested in fitness and to learn about the different fitness activities in the area. I think this is a GREAT idea, especially for people who are new to the area and who want to find someone with the same fitness interests. If I had gone alone I would have met a lot of nice people to talk to anyway since everyone was very friendly! It was not an intimidating event at all.

There were a few vendors who had set up tables, most were fitness groups, like kickboxing, Crossfit, etc, and the Honest Weight Food Co-Op also had a booth with some yummy free samples!

My friend Laura works for them and was there to explain the co-op for everyone. Hi Laura!

So, when we signed in, every person attending got a card to get stamped for every fitness event you did. At the end of every event you put your card in a bowl and had the chance to win a giveaway! I thought this was a nice touch and was a great way to get people to attend the fitness demos.

After a brief warm up, the first demo of the morning was for Crossfit. The owner explained what Crossfit was to the group and then taught everyone how to do an air squat. I know what Crossfit is (my sister does it), so it was kind of redundant for me, and I thought she talked a bit to much about it. Crossfit is just something I’m not interested in at all, but to each their own. I just wanted to work out! The instructor had us do as many air squats and push ups as we could. I did something like 86 combined squats and push ups, which got my heart rate up, but I didn’t break a sweat, unfortunately.

The next fitness demo I participated in was the kickboxing! The owner of Electric City Boxing taught us all some basic kickboxing moves, which I thought was really fun. I used to take kickboxing about 4 years ago, and this demo made me really miss it!

They also had a 1 mile fun run! My sister participated in this one but I sat it out since I wanted to rest my foot. Girlnetic also has fun runs throughout the month where they are working up to a 5K race. This is another great idea–especially for those looking to get into running who don’t know many others, its a great way to meet new friends.

We didn’t end up staying for the whole time since we had some other things we wanted to do yesterday, so we weren’t entered into the raffle for the grand prize..I am still wondering what it was!

I really liked the idea of this event, unfortunately I had gone in hoping to workout more and break a sweat and burn tons of calories. I also would have liked to see something like a yoga class or some more cardio classes to actually work up a good sweat. It was VERY BASIC, like for extreme fitness beginners. A bit too basic for me. But I still had fun time learning about the different types of fitness.

Disclaimer: I was provided the entry fee for myself and a guest in return for blogging about the Girlnetic Fitness Event Kickoff.
