Cohoes Founders’ Day 15K

Why did I think this race was a good idea?

I signed up for this local 15K not too long ago–I wanted to run a small, local race! Alicia and Heather ran it too, and so did my sister Julie! My friend Valerie also signed up, too! I knew ahead of time that I wasn’t going to run this race fast–it was just going to be too hot and the course was going to be too tough.

I didn’t think it was going to be as tough as it was, though! It felt like it was uphill for miles 2-8. Besides the hills, I thought it was a good course! The volunteers were great and they directed the runners very well! I’m not familiar with Cohoes at all, so I had no clue where I was running, but it was nice. It was through parks, bike trails, and some residential areas.

I managed to run up the hills for the first four or so miles, but eventually they just got too hard and I ended up walking the big ones. My legs just weren’t in it today!

I spent mile seven chatting with another runner, and then before I knew it, my watch hit 9.0 miles. I booked it to the finish line. Done in 1:39:30–average of 10:39. That was almost the same exact time as my first 15K–I guess I’m predictable! I know if I want to get faster in this weather I need to train harder–more speed workouts and hillwork.

I found Julie and Valerie waiting for me! Valerie finished in 1:18–taking first in her age group! Go Valerie!

My sister ran the Mastodon 5K in 31 minutes, which was awesome too. So proud of these girls!

Heather & Alicia also finished right behind me! They did great, too.

With this 15K I feel burned out on running distance. I still enjoy it, but lately the races have been hot and not that fun. I think I’m going to take a break from longer distance races this summer until I start marathon training, so I’m not completely  sick of running by then.  I want to be feel fresh when it comes time to start training!

Racing in the heat and not enjoying it to the fullest is too common of a theme everywhere these days. It’s probably a good idea to take a break from distance races for a while. As you plan for marathon training, look for a half marathon or something close in September/early October to help you gauge where you’ll be time wise for Richmond. I sure hope that conditions in November stay cool!
