Mount Haystack and the Johns Brook Lodge

Saturday was a great day to tackle a high peak! Chris was visiting from Ohio this past weekend (and also defended his dissertation and now officially has his doctorate! Yay Chris!) and to make things more exciting we also had a hike on tap. Our friends Meredith and John wanted to hike a high peak (they have already done all 46 and want to hike some of them again!) and stay in the ADK Mountain Club’s John’s Brook Lodge for a night. When they asked if we were interested I said of course! The JBL is a lodge located 3.5 miles from the Garden Parking lot in Keene Valley and…

Hiking Giant and Rocky Peak Ridge

Another beautiful weekend behind us. What fantastic weather we had this past weekend. Perfect for a hike, right? Of course. I made a last minute decision to head up North again to tackle a peak or two. Giant was on my list of hikes to do this year and I couldn’t wait to do it. My friend Brendan and I arrived at the trailhead at 7:30AM Saturday and took the Ridge Trail to Giant. The entire way was just a steep climb with few flat portions to catch your breath. I was struggling up the mountain, but took my time and took a few water breaks. We arrived at the…

Hiking Big Slide and the Brothers

Friday night, my sister, our friend Brendan and I drove to Keene Valley to stay a few nights in the Adirondacks for some hiking! I wanted to take my sister up there to experience a hike and thought she would enjoy it! She is in pretty good shape, even though she doesn’t do any hiking, so I figured we could tackle a moderate but not too easy hike, so I decided on Big Slide! Saturday morning at around 8:30 am, we parked at The Garden Parking lot for $7 and it was already filling up! Everyone knew it would be a nice day for hiking, despite the previous night’s rain.…

    Phelps Mountain

Winter hiking was never really on my radar until recently. I love being outdoors and pushing myself physically, and since I’m not marathon training now, I need goals! And hiking is a great way to test your limits. Most of the hikes I’ve done in the past few months have been more difficult, and more physically and mentally demanding than I thought. Getting to the top of a mountain is extremely rewarding and nothing can compare, even the finish line of a marathon. Both feelings are fantastic–but they are different. Jona and I were planning on hiking up in the high peaks on Saturday. The weather report was…interesting. The high…

Hiking Sawteeth: First Winter High Peak

Happy Christmas Eve! I took yesterday and today off from work to enjoy the holidays. I got all of my shopping done on Saturday and had Sunday to relax and hang out with Chris before he left for PA. So, Monday I had free to get in some WINTER HIKING. Yes, you read that right! Jona and I were originally planning on hiking on Saturday, but the weather up north wasn’t that great so we postponed until Monday. Jona decided on Sawteeth. The trailhead is located at the same place where I hiked last time with Christine, at the AMR. But this time we had a bit further to walk…
