School Update

Ah, school. I’ve been out of college for five years now (how is this possible?) but technically I’m still a student! As I mentioned in the past, I decided to go back to school for nutrition. My ultimate goal is to become a Registered Dietitian. I was accepted into a nutrition program at a local college last year, but deferred my acceptance until Fall of 2013 so I can continue getting the pre-requisites out of the way.

Since the fall of 2010 I’ve taken: Intro to Psych, Intro to Nutrition Science, Accounting, General Chemistry and Microbiology. Within the next year I hope to squeeze four more courses in (while working full time, yikes) so I can start taking classes in the RD program in Fall of 2013. I’m taking this summer off from classes–it will probably be my last break for the next three to four years.

I’m pretty much starting from scratch because I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications (no sciences to be found except bio 100) — but I’m really looking forward to becoming a full time student again, even if I still have to still work my day job throughout.

Is there anyone out there in the same boat as me– Changing careers and going back to school? Any tips?

I’m nervous and excited at the same time. Its not for another year, but it will be here before I know it! I’m trying to plan ahead. 🙂

I haven’t changed careers but I did a dual Master’s degree in History & Public Policy while working full-time. It’s difficult but doable. Since I work in the public health field and my degrees aren’t related, lately I’ve been thinking about going back to get another Master’s, this time in Bioethics since I foresee staying in public health for a long time. BUT, it’s expensive – that’s the only downside. 🙁

Good luck with your studies! You’ll make it through with flying colors!

Thanks Kristin! My program is expensive, too…I’m going to need to take out more loans on the top of my undergrad loans, but I think it will be worth it in the long run!

I’m in school and working full-time now, and it’s been hard, but doable. I’m trying to change careers from publishing to teaching college (from one competitive career to an even more competitive career!), so I’m willing to put in the extra work, and I know it will be worth it soon, especially since I don’t need to take out loans because I’m working and have received some tuition remission. The only thing I regret about it is that I don’t have time to do all the fun & resume boosting extracurriculars I could do in college. But, I love it, and I wouldn’t give up the chance to go to school for the world!

I graduated last year with a degree in Journalism but am considering taking pre-reqs for a Nursing degree — completely different!
I’m starting out with Psych (Lifespan) right now, so we’ll see how it goes. I’m nervous about the sciences because I took almost ZERO in college for my major haha

Changing careers – not as unusual as it used to be. For that and for going back to school, it helps to have a support system. Family, friends, and especially a significant other, who will all be supportive.
