Detox Wrap-Up and a Cookbook Giveaway!
I am officially done with my detox! In case you are just checking in, this past week I started a detox for the new year in order to jump start my weight loss (10lbs) that I am trying to lose. Check out my previous posts:
Detox Day 1
Detox Update
Detox Day 5
Day 6 and 7 didn’t go exactly as I had planned because I also had a 10K race on schedule for today. I noticed on Friday when I ran 3 miles that I felt zapped of energy from not having as many carbs as I usually do during the week. So, in order to fuel properly for my race I added some carbs and fish into my diet.
Saturday’s breakfast was a detox friendly protein smoothie.
For lunch on Saturday I went to my mom’s favorite restaurant, Red Lobster, to celebrate her 60th Birthday. Fortunately they had some healthy options on the menu. I chose the maple glazed salmon and shrimp with a side of broccoli and wild rice pilaf. It was pretty tasty. I also had some of my sister’s mashed potatoes, about half of the portion. I successfully avoided the cheddar bay biscuits, too (so proud of myself because those things are addicting and not good for you).
And I suprised my mom with a birthday carrot cake for dessert! And yes, I decorated it myself. BTW, cake decorating is HARD…it is also hard to not lick the bowl and eat the leftover frosting from the can, just sayin’.
And yes, I had a piece of cake for dessert, even though it was a detox no-no. Reason being? My pre-race superstition! I knew I needed a little bit of extra carbs and sugar for my 10K the next morning.
Since I was lazy for dinner last night and not too hungry, I snacked on a bowl of gluten free rice cereal with almond milk and it did the trick.
Anyway, today on the other hand was supposed to be day 7 of the detox, but instead of a smoothie for breakfast I had my usual pre-race breakfast of cereal with granola and almond milk. They say never to change anything on race day so I wasn’t going to just for this detox. I wanted to run a good race! Check in tomorrow for my race recap to find out about how the race went.
Now that its over, here are my thoughts on the detox from “Cooking with Trader Joe’s : Skinny Dish” cookbook:
- This detox is not scary! I had always been afraid of detoxes because of I was afraid of giving up certain foods for a long period of time! Let me tell you, a week is not long! I avoided dairy 100% for 6 days and I didn’t really even miss it. I’m actually debating if I want to go back to buying greek yogurt every week. I really liked the idea of having a bowl of fresh fruit instead for my morning snack.
- I didn’t feel weak or tired at all throughout the course of the 6 days, with the exception of a 3 mile run on Friday, which I blame on the lack of carbs. My runs earlier in the week were fine.
- I fully plan on doing this detox again for one week every month, or every few months in order to keep my eating “in check”. I had been eating from the candy bowl too often at work (every day!) when in reality, in order to maintain my weight loss, it should have been a once a week treat. I’ve said in the past I’ve wanted to do this but never had the will power, and I think now I’ve gotten some of that will power back because of this detox.
- Some of the recipes from the cookbook were so easy and healthy I plan on making them on a regular basis!
- I didn’t weigh myself at the beginning of the detox, but I do know by the end of Day 7 by jeans were fitting much more comfortable! I’m not sure how many pounds I lost (if any) but I know I felt MUCH better than I did at the start of the detox. I definitely put on weight from the holidays and this was a great way to finally get back in “weight loss” mode for the new year. I’m hoping I can stick with it.
Now, for some GREAT news. When I first posted about the detox, the author of the cookbook, Jennifer Reilly, RD, contacted me and offered to send a signed copy of her awesome cookbook to a lucky reader! How sweet is that?!
All you have to do to enter is check out her blog and then leave a comment telling me what recipe you would make if you won!
The giveaway will be open until Friday at NOON and then I will choose a winner. Good luck. π

I’m so glad you are doing this giveaway! I’ll admit that the word “detox” sounds very scary, but the things you ate didn’t seem too bad! It made me consider doing something like this in the future

Congrats on your detox. That might be exactly what I need to shake some of the sugar cravings. Also, lovely cake decorating job. I was a decorator for 3 years and your writing is much better than any rookie I saw.
I want to try the 5am latte! It’s soo simple, but sounds like a great pick-me-up in the morning!!
