Day in the Life

I’ve officially been a full-time grad student for a little over a month. And even though I’m really busy, its actually pretty do-able and I haven’t wanted to pull my hair out… yet. I’m usually busy from 7AM until after 8PM on most days, but it isn’t so bad. I keep reminding myself that it’s worth it (I absolutely love my classes) and the hard work will pay off in the end.

Here is a look at one of my typical days.

5:15AM Alarm goes off, cat follows me into bathroom and drinks out of the sink while I put my contacts in and put on my running clothes, fill up water bottle *yes, he has a bowl of fresh water, but apparently running tap > bowls

5:20AM Leave for the gym

5:30AM Arrive at gym, hop on the treadmill for 4 mi of speedwork! Hope that these super early speedwork sessions pay off when I run my half marathon in a little over a week

6:20AM Cool down, walk on treadmill for a bit, get off, stretch

6:40AM Head back to apartment

7:00AM Arrive home, shower, get ready for work, make coffee, eat breakfast, pack today’s lunch (home made veggie burger) and dinner (leftover Rana ravioli with broccoli and pesto), feed cat, drink coffee and check emails

7:50AM Make sure I have the right books/materials for class tonight, pack work and school bags. I’m taking three classes so I have to make sure I take the right stuff! On most days I leave with three bags in hand, so I feel like a bag lady

8:10AM Leave for work

8:30AM Arrive at work, get started on to do list

12:45PM Back to work

3:00PM Another round of stairs

4:45PM Leave work!!

5:15PM Arrive to campus, park, head to library to work on some schoolwork. Today I work on SPSS data sets calculating p-value and chi square values for my health research class, fun and exciting stuff! I only have 15 min before class starts so I try to squeeze in a few questions from the assignment due next week. Eat my dinner while working on assignment

5:30PM Class time! Today we have lecture followed by open lab to work on our SPSS assignments

7:30PM Class gets out early because I’m done with my assignment. Wahoo! Walk to car and drive home

7:50PM FINALLY HOME! Feed cat, eat a snack, check e-mails and watch some TV with Chris and we catch up about our day

9:30PM Bed time, get ready to do it again the next day

Way to go Jen – I gotta get back into doing stairs at work…a shame not to take advantage of being in a high-rise building. Hang in there and may the hard work pay off as you said!

I have a very similar schedule these days, and it can certainly be exhausting being a runner/workout addict in the mornings, full-time desk jobber all day, and grad student at night. Props to you for time management and not pulling out your hair. 🙂
