Boots at the Biergarten

Yesterday for breakfast I broke out the Pumpkin Pie Steel-Cut Oats. I had a whole container of oats sitting in the fridge I almost forgot about! But they were still good, thank goodness! I love adding pumpkin butter to my oats. So good!

I went easy at lunch (had a hummus wrap) because I knew I would be going to the Biergarten for dinner, since it was my friend Keri’s 25th birthday, and she wanted her boot!

But first, after work Chris and I went for a short three mile run. And it sucked. My legs were tired, and I just was not in the mood to run, although my ankle was fine! But the tiredness might have been due to the fact I went to the gym the night before and did the elliptical for 30 minutes, which may have made fatigued my legs. We finished three miles in 31 minutes. By then we were starving and to the Biergarten we went.

For all you non-locals out there, the Biergarten is a German bar with all German beers and German food. And on the day of your birthday, you can get a boot of beer for free, with a deposit that you get back when you finish. But coming here created the ULTIMATE challenge for Chris, since he loves the beer here, and we can only drink LOCAL beer! No Biergarten drinks for us! So, we ordered waters at the bar. This actually probably saved us money. I would have ordered their raspberry lambic, since I like lambics (I love sweet and fruity things!), but I couldn’t! This is why my Green Challenge is a challenge, because we were the only ones in our group not drinking. (But fortunately, New York is lucky to have some good beers and breweries. Check out my previous post on local beer and wine.)

I would not consider the food at the Biergarten healthy, round meals. They have lots of German food to choose from:  wursts, burger sliders, mac and cheese with ham, schnitzels, and more types of German meats I can’t pronounce. I really have no idea the difference between wurst or schnitzel. I don’t eat that type of meat, so I don’t really care. If you’re looking to eat something healthy, do not eat here. But since Chris and I didn’t have dinner, we ordered something.

They only have a few non-meat options: the potato pancakes, the vegetarian curry-wurst (what the heck is that?); and from the appetizer menu: spaetzle (fried noodles), pretzels, onion rings, a cucumber salad, and some of kind of cabbage thing. I went with the potato pancakes!

They were good…for what they were. I wasn’t expecting much. They were heavy and filling, and I’m assuming fried. They came with applesauce and sour cream.

Chris and I also shared the spaetzle, the fried noodles with some kind of red sauce. The flavor of the sauce reminded me of Indian food for some odd reason. I wasn’t too impressed with the noodles.

Chris got the sliders and onion rings and said they were tasty!

Overall, we had fun! Chris got to watch some soccer on the big screen and we hung out with my friends for a birthday celebration. And Keri finished her boot!

However, I would not eat here again unless I was desperate for something. My potato pancakes were okay in a pinch, I was left full but not satisfied. I realize that if I don’t have a complete meal: a protein, some carbs, and some veggies (are there vegetables on the menu here?!) ,  I am not satisfied with my meal. I guess that’s what I get for training my mind and body to enjoy healthy food! 🙂
