2013 HMRRC Winter Series #5 – 10M

The last Winter Series race of the 2012-13 season is in the books! I actually only missed one this year because I was flying back from Florida during the 10K- oh well!

Last year I set a PR during the 10 mile race, but I knew this year it wasn’t in the cards. I’m just slower right now. My legs just don’t want to move fast.

Anyway, I ran most of this race with these lovely ladies, Kristin & Melissa. They were ahead of me most of the time, actually. 😉

(yes, that pic is from the 15K in December.)

At times I had trouble keeping up with them, my legs just wouldn’t MOVE. But we all finished near each other, so that was cool.

The weather was nice for this race too. It was 20 degrees when we started, but no wind and the sun made it a lot more tolerable! (Sad that I think 20 is warm? I think so.) Thankfully I didn’t overdress this time. What I wore to keep warm was one layer on the bottom: running tights, and three layers on top: tank top, tech t-shirt, long sleeve top. And of course, ear-warmers and gloves. It was perfect!

The first half was pretty tough–I just felt tired. By the second half of the race and the last loop around the campus I felt a lot better and managed to have a strong finish.

Race stats

Distance – 10.08 miles
Time – 1:38:54
Average pace – 9:53/mile (my goal was under 10:00/mile!)

I really need to get better with refueling properly after my runs. This time I tried stretching  a lot more and drank a protein shake as soon as I got home, along with a Cheribundi tart cherry juice to help reduce inflammation.
