Sporty Pal Fitness Pack Review and Giveaway!

Disclaimer: I was sent an android phone and code for a Sporty Pal Fitness application for review on my blog but my views and opinions are my own.

Last month I was contacted by Sony Ericcson to try out an Android fitness application called Sporty Pal. When I told the company I don’t have an Android phone (or any smartphone for that matter–I’m still in the stone age) they offered to send me the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini to try out the application on!

The good thing about the phone is that I didn’t need a cell phone plan to use the application! It connected to my wireless internet at my apartment and I was able to download the application from the Android market right onto the phone.

Sunday I tested it out for a portion of my long run! The application was really cool because you can choose from a multitude of different sports, everything from running to cycling, and even horseback riding or skiing.

I was also sent the Liveview, the mini screen that you clip on that connects to your phone to give you instant notifications without having to check the phone itself. I didn’t use the Liveview on my run because I knew I would be carrying my phone and I didn’t want another thing clipped to me.

Anyway, the phone has a GPS built-in and Sporty Pal quickly connected to satellites so it knew where I was and I could start tracking!

I accidentally had it set on metric settings, but I easily changed it after my run to show miles instead of kilometers. Every once in a while it notified me of my progress but I couldn’t hear the voice talking to me because I was listening to my iPod, so afterward I changed the settings to turn it off. If I was listening to music on the phone itself, I probably would have heard the notifications. I thought that was a really cool aspect of the program though.

Once I hit stop it gave me the option to upload my workout, which I couldn’t do until I got home since I didn’t have access to wireless. (I’m assuming if you had a data plan with the phone you could just do it automatically.) Once I got to my apartment I connected to my wifi and easily uploaded the workout to the sportypal website. I love how it automatically uploaded via wifi instead of conneting with a USB cord, like my Garmin does.

I thought it was really cool to see the stats all laid out on the map. Its very similar to my Garmin’s software, with a nicer looking interface. I loved you could keep track of all your workouts right on the one page.

Overall I thought it was a very easy to use and nifty application. It’s very easy to track your fitness progress through the program. However, I found it was pretty similar to my Garmin 205 watch, so I probably would use one or the other.

I’m going to be giving away the fitness pack which includes the Liveview screen display and code for the Sporty Pal fitness application to a lucky reader so you can track your workouts in one place, on your phone!
