Jen's Green Challenge

Running Around with Reusable Bags

Yesterday I really put my Green Challenge #2 to the test–I brought my reusable grocery bags to the mall. And let me assure you, I was probably the only person walking around the mall shopping for clothes with reusable bags. And it wasn’t all that bad!

Normally when we think about reusuable bags, we think grocery bags, but why does it have to stop there? Even some clothing and retail stores are now selling reusuable shopping bags. I’ve seen them at Old Navy, for example.

These will come in handy if I forget mine the next time I’m at the mall and I want to buy something.

Anyway–It was kind of hard to remember at first to tell the cashier to throw my stuff in my bag instead of give me a plastic one, but I got used to it after a while! And the best part is, if I can’t fit anymore in my bag, then I can’t buy anymore stuff! 😉

There are also a bunch of websites to buy reusuable bags:

Ecobags.com; they have everything from tote bags, produce bags, lunch boxes, and water bottles. Most of their products are made from recycled or sustainable material.

Chicobag.com; lots of reusable bags made from recycled products. And they are cute and come in different colors.

Etsy.com; a website that sells hand-made crafts, including all types of tote bags, which you can find by typing in “reusuable tote bag”, or something of the like. There are a lot of cute bags on here–and the best part is, when you buy one you’re not only helping the environment, but buying something hand-made!

I love this idea! I think I will try this starting today. I like your thought about “if I can’t fit anymore in my bag, then I can’t buy anymore stuff.” Love that!! It will keep me under control when I am doing my Christmas shopping.

One additional thought. Who’s guilty of hoarding plastic bags? I am! I know there are stores like Walmart that allow you to drop off your used plastic bags for them to recycle too. 🙂

    Have a great weekend!

i’ve been taking my reusable bags with me everywhere for the past year or so. even when i go on vacation they are with me! once you get used to remembering to bring them with you, it’ll be a breeze. =)

I love my Eddie Bauer nylon bag for this use. I keep it in my hand-bag for the odds and ends I pick up. It zips up so small I sometimes forget I have it until I see my stuff getting put in a horrible plastic bag.
