Florida Today 8K
This morning my alarm went off at 5:00AM! It was still dark when my parents and I drove to Melbourne for the 8K race that I was signed up to run today. Originally, my plan was to be in Florida to run the half marathon that takes place tomorrow, but after injuring my hip I had to stop training for three weeks, so I dropped down to the 8K race, which I was fine with!
Early pre-race breakfast was a bagel thin with peanut butter and strawberry jam.
It was still dark when we got there at 6:00…all of the Melbourne shops were closed.
The temperature for 7:00 at the start of the race was 66 degrees! I was glad I wore shorts and tank to run in, since I knew I would get pretty warm fast.
The race itself was pretty uneventful, there were some singers on the sidewalks, which was nice. The view was gorgeous!
The worst part was climbing the bridge over the Indian River, it was pretty steep. We only went half way and then turned back around.
It was cloudy which was actually nice, since it would have been kind of unbearable if the sun was beating down. My body is not conditioned to running in warm weather anymore!
I took a few walking breaks just because I felt like I needed them to re-energize myself, and it worked!
I finished the 5.02 miles in 47 minutes and 8 seconds!! Not too bad considering this is the fourth time I’ve ran since I had to take a three week break! I’m happy with my time.
We didn’t stick around for too long after the race since there was a 5K starting at 8:00. I was definitely not in the mood to eat, either.
Garmin Stats
On the way back we stopped at the “manatee zone”, a small section of water where supposedly the manatees like to hang out.
No manatee sightings…just tons of catfish and a pelican.
Better luck next time!
So, I’m really glad I ran a race while I’m here. I haven’t mentioned it before, but one of my goals is to run races in as many states as possible! Two down…
Enjoy your Saturday!! 🙂

NICE Job!!! I’m from wny and ran a 10k in Florida with the crazy heat with no training and heat and had the hardest time! Such a great looking run though!

The pictures you took are breath-taking considering what we are expecting up here.
Great job for having to halt your training for a bit.

Love your blog. Long time lurker — first time commenter.
Congrats on your FL run!
A word on the manatees: they move to inlets — like the one you
visited — when the large area water temp drops to around 62 degrees.
Otherwise, they prefer the Gulf of Mexico (my parents live in Naples FL)
or the Atlantic Ocean.
Enjoy your vacation!

Thank you!
