Favorite Places to Snowshoe

Oh look, another 3-5 inches in the forecast! Hurray! (Note the half-sarcasm there.)

So I’ve told you how I stay warm while snowshoeing, but I haven’t really put together a short list of places I’ve been going to snowshoe. Here are my favorite places so far!

Five Rivers Environmental Center in Delmar, NY

I grew up coming to Five Rivers every summer when I was a kid. (And I trail run here a lot in the summer) However, only this Winter have I ever taken advantage of the trails during this season. They are gorgeous and there are many trails to choose from! And Five Rivers is only a short drive from Albany, too. Five Rivers trail maps are located here.

Pine Bush Preserve in Albany, NY

I like going to the Pine Bush because it is SO close to where I live that if I want to go snowshoeing I really have no excuse! They have many trail loops (long or short) that are perfect for any ability. And its pretty, too. Pine Bush trail maps are located here.

Thacher State Park in Voorheesville, NY

Just a short drive from Albany, Thacher Park is awesome. They have so many trails open in the winter for skiing, snowshoeing and even snowmobiling. This park is my favorite – its sooo beautiful! Trail maps are located here.

Do you want to add to my list? Where are your favorite local places to snowshoe?

I used to live in Clifton Park and loved snowshoeing at the Vischer-Ferry Nature Preserve, along the towpath and out into some of their trails. Thacher S.P. is also a favorite of mine and I’ve even made a great day trip of snowshoeing in Saratoga State Park and then heading into town for dinner afterwards. This weekend I think we’re heading to the Southern Adirondacks to hike a small mountain and get some good views. I need to head over to the Pine Bush more often – it’s so close, but I always forget it because I avoid it like the plague in the summer due to the ticks!

There was a group of people snowshoeing on Lake George this past weekend. They laughed and wondered why a ton of people were out there in their boots rather than exploring in snowshoes!
