Altamont Winery

Saturday was a lovely day. Chris and I took advantage of the warm weather (almost 90 degrees!) and my recent Groupon purchase to finally check out the Altamont Winery!

Did you know Albany county has a vineyard? Neither did I until not too long ago. I called ahead to set up a tour (they do two tours a day on Saturday and Sunday) followed by a tasting.

They have a cute tasting room where you can purchase wine and other gifts.

We looked around while we waited for the tour. They took us out to the vineyard to show us their grape vines and explain how the grapes grow and what makes the conditions good here. The fact that the vineyards are sloping downward toward the Heldeberg Mountains brings in warmer air so the grapes can grow better! It was a pretty gorgeous sight!

This is what the grapes look like when they start to grow. Someday these babies will be in your bottle of wine!

Each vine is marked with the grape name and the year it was planted.

I couldn’t get over the views!

After learning about the vineyards, they took us to where they press the grapes and then make the wine.

Grape press.

Holding tanks. There is lots of wine in here!

Some Chardonnay?

Then it gets aged in oak barrels.

Finally bottled, sold, and enjoyed by you and I.

Following the tour we had the tasting! We tried five different types. We got to choose what we wanted to taste by filling out their tasting sheet.

My favorite was definitely the sweet, fruity Elefante, which was named after their cat!

I bought a bottle to bring to my parents since were heading there after the tour for a BBQ.

Chris and I had such a great time touring the Altamont Winery! It is a great place to check out if you’re into wine and don’t want to drive far away to get a tour of a winery. Its about 30 minutes from Albany so its practically in my backyard!
