Hiking Algonquin, Iroquois and Wright Peaks

Another weekend down, more high peaks crossed off the list! Saturday was the perfect day for a hike–the weather was looking fantastic! I was waiting for the perfect day to tackle Algonquin, New York’s second highest mountain, along with Iroquois and Wright. Jenna and I met at Exit 9 at 5am, got to the Loj around 7:15 and were off by 7:30. It was a quick mile to the junction to Marcy Dam, we went right to go to Wright and Algonquin. The first few miles are very pleasant! Then we started climbing steeply, but we had a really good pace! Many sections of the trail are really rocky. Made…

    Street and Nye Mountains

Happy (belated) fourth of July! Did anyone get out and go hiking? I did! I got a group of my awesome hiking friends together and went up to the Lake Placid area to hike two more high peaks, Street and Nye Mountains. It was a later start for me, meeting at Exit 9 Park & Ride at 7:30AM. We got up to the Adirondack Loj trail parking area at around 10:00AM. The trail for Street and Nye is unmarked, meaning there are no trail marker disks anywhere to be found on the trail, however, there are rock cairns at certain points to  let hikers know they are on the right…

Winter Solstice: Hiking Nippletop and Dial Mountains

Sunday marked the very first day of Winter. I celebrated by hiking with my winter hiking buddy Jona. (Last season we hiked two Winter peaks together, Sawteeth and Phelps!)–this time we were tackling two High Peaks in one day, Nippletop and Dial. After an early wake up (3:15am!), I met Jona and her friend Paula at Exit 9 Park and Ride to get to the trailhead by 6:15AM. We wanted an early start because we had a long hike ahead of us and the daylight hours were limited! The parking lot for these peaks is in St. Huberts near the Ausable Club. We parked the car and signed in to…

The Longest Hike – Allen Mountain

Saturday was the perfect September day! My day started out VERY early at 4:00 AM. Christine is on her way to finishing her Adirondack 46 this month and  only has a few more high peaks to hike. I joined her for one of the longest, Allen Mountain. We arrived at the trailhead for Allen at the East River parking lot at about 7:00am. The sun had been up for only a few minutes. We wanted as much day light as possible because this was a doozey of a hike. About 18-19 miles round trip and an estimated 12 hours of hiking. I was game because I like walking and I…

Mount Haystack and the Johns Brook Lodge

Saturday was a great day to tackle a high peak! Chris was visiting from Ohio this past weekend (and also defended his dissertation and now officially has his doctorate! Yay Chris!) and to make things more exciting we also had a hike on tap. Our friends Meredith and John wanted to hike a high peak (they have already done all 46 and want to hike some of them again!) and stay in the ADK Mountain Club’s John’s Brook Lodge for a night. When they asked if we were interested I said of course! The JBL is a lodge located 3.5 miles from the Garden Parking lot in Keene Valley and…
