Winter Wonderland in the High Peaks – Hiking Phelps 12.8.18
Last week I got an invite from my friend Alicia to hike Phelps with her and our friend Francis. The weather was looking a bit cold, but I decided to join them since it had been a while since I’d hiked and was craving a long outdoor adventure. It had also been a while since I’d been on snowshoes (more like 2 years)! Alicia and I met at the exit 12 park and ride at 5:30am and drove up the Loj to meet Francis and his friend Mike. Phelps Mountain in the Spring
Yesterday I hiked Phelps, the 32nd highest peak in NY, for the second time. The first time I hiked this mountain was back in January 2014 with Jona. It was cold. Yesterday’s weather was much better! The temps were perfect. There was very little ice on the trail (only at higher elevations). It was a beautiful day. Brendan is my good friend and one of my hiking buddies. Phelps Mountain
Winter hiking was never really on my radar until recently. I love being outdoors and pushing myself physically, and since I’m not marathon training now, I need goals! And hiking is a great way to test your limits. Most of the hikes I’ve done in the past few months have been more difficult, and more physically and mentally demanding than I thought. Getting to the top of a mountain is extremely rewarding and nothing can compare, even the finish line of a marathon. Both feelings are fantastic–but they are different.
