The Lean Green Bean

Another New World Rave Review

Good morning! Chris and I are almost settled into our new place–still have some boxes to get rid of and I still have to hang up my picture frames–but other than that it’s almost ready! As soon as it looks normal I’ll post some pictures for you all. I’m in love with the apartment! And its great having someone to come to, too. :-)

Sunday night we cooked dinner in our new kitchen for Chris’ parents. (They were here from Pittsburgh to help him move.)

But Saturday night we all went out to dinner in Albany–Chris and I brought them to New World Bistro, our favorite restaurant here. And yes, they loved it just as much as we did.

Chris and I split the seitan wings for an app. I didn’t want anything too spicy so we got a light sauce with it–unfortunately I can’t remember what kind of sauce it was. It was really thin and added just a small bit of flavor to the “wings”. They were also served with some chopped pineapple. The wings themselves were nice and crispy! Yum.

Going with the seitan theme here for my meal I got the sandwich with marinara sauce on a roll.

The sandwich was amazing! The side I picked was the featured vegetable, which happened to be parsnips. The parsnips were so different, especially featured at a restaurant…but not surprising since they really focus on local and seasonal food here. They were good and gave the meal an interesting twist! The only minor gripe I had was that the server said my sandwich came with cheese but I didn’t have any on it..that was a bit disappointing, too. For some reason I can never send food back (unless it is absolutely horrible or has hair on it or something) but for something that minor I just let it slide.  The sandwich would have been great with or without cheese.

Now time for dessert! I got the ice cream sandwich of the day–vanilla ice cream between two heavenly chocolate cookies…amazing! There was also a banana sauce on top, which tasted great. Usually I find banana flavored things over-powering, sometimes they can ruin food for me…but this was just right. The banana flavor was light and cinnamonny…very good. New World does desserts so well–especially the ice cream sandwich!

One of the best desserts I ever had was here after my first half marathon. I still think about that ice cream sandwich to this day.

Chris got the steak for his dinner and he said it was one of the best steaks he’s ever had! He loves his steak. :-)

We had such a good meal at New World. We just can’t rave enough about this place. We love it!

April Foodie Penpals Package

It’s that time of the month again–time to reveal my Foodie Penpals package!

The Lean Green Bean

This month I received my package from Stephanie!

In my package: Trader Joe’s dark chocolate caramel & sea salt bar, cookie butter (AHH!) and peanut brittle. I’m a TJ’s fanatic so I love getting TJ’s goodies in my package. Only a few more months until Albany’s opens up, I hope.

But I was so excited to see this in the box…

Heaven. in. a. jar.

Thanks, Steph!

Changes on the Horizon

Something exciting happening! I’m moving again, but this time Chris and I will be moving in together! We found a really nice place in Albany and signed the lease when we got back from Florida. Its a big step but we’re both looking forward to it.

For the past year I’ve been living in downtown Troy. There are a lot of preconceived about the City. I knew that when I moved there and I do not regret that one bit! I decided to move here since it was cheaper for a one bedroom apartment then those I looked at in Albany. Also, Chris told me I would regret it if I didn’t live on my own for a year before we moved in together. I’m glad he told me do it, since it was a good experience.  So for the past year, I’ve been enjoying Troy. I’ve really loved living there.

It does have its downfalls, but for the most part, Troy has a lot to offer–great restaurants, shops, and an awesome farmer’s market. I’ll still be making the trek to Xs to Os for brunch, you can be sure of it!

I am looking forward to being back in Albany, though!

I lived in the Pine Hills area from 2003-2007 when I went to Saint Rose and then found an apartment with two college friends a few blocks from the school the year after I graduated. It was an experience. I really took living there for granted. I lived within walking distance to a lot of places, but never walked anywhere (except to the bus stop), but at the time I wasn’t health conscious at all. I had a great area to go for walks and nice routes to run but didn’t do either. I have my regrets, but I can’t change the past!

In May of 2008 I moved back home with my parents who live 30 minutes from Albany and stayed there to save money for the next three years. I still don’t know how I managed to commute to work and to my friends and Chris for that long, but I did it!  Finally, last year I made the move and got a place for myself in Troy. It was closer to work and to Chris, which I really liked.

I’ve learned a lot living on my own–I pay my own rent, bills, etc and only have my cat to keep me company when I’m by myself. At first I thought I would be lonely by myself, but that was not the case! I loved it. It will probably take some adjusting to get used to sharing a space with someone again, but I can’t wait. I’m really excited for this next step in my life! To me, Troy will always be that special place where I first lived on my own!

So, any tips on moving in with a significant other? It will be new for both of us!

Why I Chose the Richmond Marathon

I put a lot of thought into which marathon I wanted to be my first.

I didn’t choose a local race because I wanted a new adventure in a new place. The Mohawk Hudson River Marathon is Albany’s fall marathon-a fast and flat course on extremely familiar trails down the Hudson and Mohawk River. For some people this would be a no-brainer. I could sleep in my own bed the night before the race and it would be less stressful and I could run 26.2 miles on the trails I know. But, I wanted a change. The marathon runs on the same bike path I  train on. Sure, its beautiful course, but by then I’m sure I’d be so sick of the Mohawk Hudson Bike path it would probably make me puke. There is also not much crowd support during the race, if any at all. There were a few people scattered here and there at the end (when I did the half marathon), but I don’t think that it would be enough to push me through the last 6.2 miles of a marathon. I  need a cheering crowd and ENERGY! But I’m definitely not ruling it out for a future marathon if all goes well the first time around!

I didn’t choose the huge race that {mostly} everyone wants to run.  I used to think this was the only marathon I ever wanted to do–the biggest marathon in the country in one of the biggest cities in the world. This year, I didn’t enter the lottery for the New York City Marathon. I probably wouldn’t have gotten in if I did. {A big congrats to those who did, though!} Sure, maybe SOMEDAY I’ll run this race if I’m lucky–but after really thinking about it, I didn’t want to pay $255 to run 26.2 miles when there are cheaper races that could be just as exciting.

Why DID I choose the Richmond Marathon?

{image source: Richmond Marathon’s Facebook Profile}

It was honestly a toss up between the Philadelphia Marathon and the Richmond Marathon. But, I’ve been to Philly a few times already and I’ve never been to Virginia other than driving through it on the way to Florida a few times when I was growing up. The new place won out. I had read a few blogger reviews about this marathon and how awesome it is. It also got rave reviews on marathon guide. The race takes place in November, which means training in late summer/early fall, which is exactly what I wanted. It was cheap {$70 for a full marathon!} and bit but not HUGE, with 3,779 finishers in 2010 . There were also options of a half marathon & 8K race if {God forbid} anything happen and I need to drop down to the shorter distance. There’s a new city to explore and it takes place during a Holiday weekend, so I automatically get the following Monday off from work. SCORE! So, that, my friends, is my reason why I picked Richmond!

Tulip Time

The tulips in Washington Park are blooming early this year–almost a month ahead of schedule! Usually they are just in time for the middle of May’s tulip celebration, Tulipfest–but they are in bloom right now! Go check them out while you still can.

It was beautiful Friday afternoon so I went to go see them. Here are my favorites!
