Mountain Biking in Flagstaff, AZ

As you may already know, Jordan and I went to Arizona for our honeymoon back in September! The first part of our trip included hiking into the Grand Canyon, which was an incredible experience.  For our honeymoon, we spent the first three nights at the National Park, followed by four nights at a cute cottage called “Berguhette” in Flagstaff, just 1.5 hours from the Grand Canyon. The cottage was the PERFECT base for us and it was a perfect size as well.

Since we brought our mountain bikes along with us for the honeymoon, the second portion of our trip would be dedicated to just that–mountain biking! We had to stop at the local bike shop, Cosmic Cycles in Flagstaff, for a bolt that went missing from my bike. The employee there was fantastic. He even recommended the must-ride trail in Flagstaff, the Schultz Creek Trail, part of the Mount Elden Dry Lakes trail system. Most of the Flagstaff trails were closed due to a forest fire, but thankfully this one was still open. It boasts a steady climb up a fire road to a sweet five-mile flowy, singletrack descent.

We climbed up the gravel road for about five miles until we hit another parking lot at the top near Schultz Tank (a small pond, not an actual tank).

Part of the Schultz Creek trail also connects with and turns into the Arizona Trail, an 800-mile trail that runs through the state of Arizona.

Soon enough it was time to start the descent!

It was a fast, flowy, non-technical trail with 985 feet of descent that was super fun. There were a few rocky sections to mix things up a bit, which made it really awesome. Check it out on trailforks.

After about 10 miles riding, we hopped in the car and drove around the area, finally ending up near Waterline Road, a gravel road only open to non-motorized vehicles.

We parked the car and hopped on our bikes to check it out. What a pleasant surprise! We had great views from every angle of this road. We saw one other person on this road, a gravel biker.

Our full-suspension mountain bikes were probably overkill for this type of riding, but they were all we had. We had a great time exploring the Flagstaff area trails and would love to come back when more trails are open for riding.

Next up the mountain biker’s red rock paradise: Sedona.
