Happiest Place on Earth – Kingdom Trails

Last weekend Jordan and I took a trip to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont (our favorite place!) to get some riding in Kingdom Trails, one of the best mountain biking trail systems in the Northeast! On our way, we stopped for dinner in White River Junction at a new-ish spot called Trail Break Taps + Tacos. They had good food, good beer, and a great ambiance!

With their ski/mtb theme, it was a great place to stop on the way up to East Burke.

We arrived at our rustic tiny cabin around 10 pm. It was just what we needed for the weekend. It was a one-room off-the-grid cabin, complete with very large firepit, grill, privy and an outdoor shower (with hot water!). As people who like to camp, it was perfect. The best part was that was only .5 mile from the mtb trails!

Saturday morning we got up, made coffee + breakfast and drove into town (2 min drive) to get our KT passes for the next two days. Then it was time to hit the trail.

After about 3 hours of riding, we rode directly to the Hub, a bike shop + bar on Darling Hill. We had a beer and tried to get some food but the food truck guy had to leave due to a family emergency. So we rode the 5ish miles back to the cabin.

Our total mileage for the day came to about 23 miles, which for me was a personal distance record for mountain biking. And I was feeling pretty good, despite the amount of climbing we did!

We showered, drove into town to get some food then came back to the cabin to start a fire. Because our fire-starting skills weren’t the best, we drove the 2 min back into town to pick up a firestarter log and package of kindling (we also each got maple creamees because…Vermont). It worked out great! Thankfully, the cabin provided the firewood. We made friends with our cabin neighbors (there were 2 other cabins on the property) and sat by the fire into the night. It was a fun time.

The next morning, we drove to Darling Hill for breakfast at one of my favorite spots, the Wildflower Inn. It was delicious as always! We hit the trails again for a short five-mile loop to a section of the trail that I hadn’t ridden yet.

Sadly it was soon time to drive the ~4 hr drive home. We stopped in St. Johnsbury for lunch at Kingdom Taproom, a great little spot with good beer and tasty food. Highly recommend! Jordan and I had a fantastic weekend together. It’s not often we take trips by ourselves but it was fun to spend some quality time with my fiance. 😀
