Fat Tire Bike Race at Gurney Lane

Last month, Gurney Lane held the first ever Fat Tire Bike Race.

Gurney Lane is a popular trail system for mountain bikers in the area. We ride there a lot in the summer, as it’s a park that offers a variety of beginner/intermediate mountain bike trails.  This winter, the Queensbury Parks and Recreation raised money for a groomer so the trails can be maintained and accessible to fat bikers in the winter. Cath and I decided to participate in the first ever Fat Tire Bike Race held at Gurney. The race had two variations, a 5 mile loop and a longer 10 mile version. Cath and I both rode the 5 mile loop.

The race began at 1pm. Despite being a little chilly, it was a beautiful sunny day.

I finished the race in a little over an hour. It wasn’t too challenging. There were some icy patches, but thankfully the day before I had put my 45nrth studded tires on! Studded tires are such a game-changer in the winter!

To our surprise, there were only three other women riding in the five mile race. That meant we all placed and got an award! For the first time in my life, I got a prize–this awesome Fat Tire Day hat.

I’m looking forward to the next time I can get up to Gurney and ride the fat bike trails! They are super fun.
