Green Challenge #5 – Reduce, Reuse & Recycle

This month’s green challenge is simple, but important. (source) One of the best ways we can help our environment is by reducing waste, reusing products and recycling. Now a days, it’s almost a no-brainer. Most, if not all, communities recycle, at least that is the case here in New York State. Here is a useful list of things that can be recycled. Paper and Cardboard Magazines, fliers, phonebooks and catalogues Newspapers Corrugated cardboard Plastic – According to EarthEasy.com, plastic cannot break down in a landfill. “Plastic goods are assigned different numbers to grade them for recycling: #1 (PET) and #2 (HDPE) for containers, #4 (LDPE) for bags, #7 for mixed…

Green Challenge #3 – Water Conservation

Okay, its that time yet again! I feel like the months are just flying by! Its December first and you know what that means. Its time for the next Green Challenge. And we’ve come up with a pretty good one, and one that is probably the most important! Challenge #3 – December 1, 2010 – December 1, 2011 For one year, conserve water by doing the following: Take “military-style” showers. Running Around with Reusable Bags

Yesterday I really put my Green Challenge #2 to the test–I brought my reusable grocery bags to the mall. Normally when we think about reusuable bags, we think grocery bags, but why does it have to stop there? Even some clothing and retail stores are now selling reusuable shopping bags. I’ve seen them at Old Navy, for example. (source) These will come in handy if I forget mine the next time I’m at the mall and I want to buy something. Anyway–It was kind…

Green Challenge #2 – Reduce Plastic Waste

Happy November 1st everyone! And today I’m starting off the month with another Green Challenge! Are you ready for it? I’ve been doing well with Challenge #1, and I’m pretty excited about #2. Green Challenge #2 – November 1, 2010 – November 1, 2011 Reduce Plastic Waste One of the biggest environmental problems is the amount of plastics sitting in landfills today. Any idea why? Because plastic doesn’t break down! It takes a simple plastic grocery bag YEARS to decompose in a landfill. Check out this list to see how long it takes certain things to biodegrade. According to Green Ecoservices, “90 billion plastic containers & bottles being landfilled or…

    Jen’s Green Challenge

I’m really happy and excited to announce a new project that I’m putting together for my blog…Jen’s Green Challenge!! Last week, Chris and I watched a documentary called “No Impact Man“. Basically, this guy, Colin Beaven, went one year leaving as little impact on the Earth as possible. He and his wife gave up every day things that we normally take advantage of. Some examples were: -Living without electricity -Eating and purchasing only local food -Giving up on using paper products -Biking or walking as transportation rather than using transportation that requires fuel -Not buying any NEW products (only buying used or recycled) -Not buying any products with packaging (buying…
