Fitness DVD Review: P90X Yoga

Thank you everyone for the lovely Blogiversary comments! I’m so glad you are reading and I am so thankful for you all!

Sunday evening I was not in the mood to drive to the gym, since I wanted to relax at home and get some housework done. I knew I wanted to get in a quality workout, so I decided to try out P90X Yoga for the first time! I have to admit, anything with P90X in front of it scares me a little bit since those workouts seem so intense, but I was excited to try out the yoga DVD. (FYI: I was not paid by the company to write this product review–I’m just sharing what I think is useful information since a friend gave me a copy!)

BTW this pose, halfmoon, is HARD

Note: this is the hardest pose of the first 50 minutes…

I had no idea what to expect from this workout DVD, since usually all forms of yoga are different…but I was expecting to get my butt kicked. But was that the case? Not really! The first 50 minutes were almost exactly like my yoga classes–except I was doing them at home! It was pretty awesome. I think someone with no yoga experience would have more trouble with it than I did.

I made it to about 50 minutes in. If I didn’t have plans that evening I would have done the whole thing, but I had to cut it short.

The workout consisted of a basic yoga warm-up, and then went into a simple vinyasa — Plank –> Chaturanga –> Upward dog –> Plank –> Downward dog — this vinyasa was repeated throughout the entire workout after each series of poses. I really liked that because it was something to look forward to after each series, especially if the series was difficult. And the repeated vinyasas also gave my arms a nice workout! I also really liked that the name of the next pose popped up on the screen so it let you know what was coming up next!

There were also lots of warrior sequences, which I really like because those poses seem to help stretch out my legs and hips. I feel this DVD would be a great cross-training session for runners to do at least once a week. I also mastered a new pose, but the name escapes me right now…extended crescent pose???

Yeah, that was hard!! I was still feeling the effects two days after P9oX Yoga–definitely a good thing! I can’t wait to finish the rest of the DVD!

P90X Yoga

Pros

  • Easy to follow along with
  • Timer on the bottom of the screen
  • Tells you what poses are coming next
  • Explains poses pretty well
  • Left me sore for a few days–might be a con for someone but not me!
  • Felt like a real yoga class

Cons

  • Long workout DVD (1 hr 40 min) so I had to break it in half since I don’t usually have that much time to work out
  • P90X is freakin’ expensive and I would never shell out that much $$ for a fitness DVD
